Chapter 2 - Ryan’s “Dead Wife” Was Very Much Alive

Rebecca did not rush into the mansion.

She stepped out of the SUV slowly, wearing a simple navy dress and carrying no dramatic evidence box, no camera and no entourage. She looked older than the photographs Claire had once seen, but there was no mistaking her.

Claire had seen Rebecca’s face in Ryan’s old wedding album.

Ryan told her Rebecca died in a boating accident six years earlier.

He said grief had changed him.

He said losing Rebecca was why he was so terrified of abandonment.

Claire had spent months excusing jealousy, surveillance and anger because she believed she was loving a traumatized widower.

Now the dead woman was walking through the front door.

Ryan struggled upright.

“Rebecca.”

Claire turned toward him.

Not Who are you?

Not How are you alive?

He knew.

Rebecca looked at Claire’s torn dress, the welt near her shoulder and the leather strap on the floor.

Her expression hardened.

“So he got worse.”

Claire felt something in her chest collapse.

Diane finally moved. “You have no right to be here.”

Rebecca looked at her. “You said the same thing at my divorce hearing.”

Claire stared at Ryan.

“Divorce?”

Ryan’s mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Rebecca answered instead.

“We divorced five years ago.”

Claire felt almost dizzy. “He told me you died.”

“I know.”

“How?”

Rebecca looked at Charles.

Claire followed her gaze.

Her father had known enough to find this woman.

That realization created a second betrayal inside the first.

“How long have you known?” Claire asked him.

“Three days.”

“And you didn’t tell me?”

“I was trying to confirm it before I destroyed your wedding with something I couldn’t prove.”

Claire laughed once, but there was no humor in it. “The wedding seems pretty destroyed already.”

Fair.

Then Rebecca said, “Ryan didn’t only lie about my death. He lied about why our marriage ended.”

Ryan finally found his voice. “You were unstable.”

Rebecca nodded slowly. “There it is.”

Claire looked at her.

Rebecca explained that she had been married to Ryan for four years. At first he was charming, attentive and protective. Then he became controlling. He monitored what she wore. Who she saw. How she spent money. Whether she spoke to her sister about arguments.

Diane always intervened afterward.

Not to protect Rebecca.

To explain Ryan.

“He’s intense because he loves deeply.”

“He had a difficult childhood.”

“You embarrassed him.”

“You know how much pressure he’s under.”

Eventually the behavior became physical.

Rebecca left.

Ryan did not accept it.

“He told everyone I had a breakdown,” she said. “When the divorce became public, his mother helped move him to Virginia and they stopped using my name.”

Claire whispered, “Why tell me you died?”

Ryan stared at the floor.

Rebecca answered, “Because a dead wife can’t contradict him.”

That sentence struck harder than the strap had.

Then Rebecca looked at Claire’s wedding dress.

“And because grief makes a good excuse for control.”

Claire turned toward Ryan.

“How much of what you told me about yourself was ever true?”

Ryan’s expression changed again.

Not guilt.

Calculation.

Then he looked at the hallway leading toward the private study.

Rebecca noticed.

So did Charles.

“What’s in there?” she asked.

Ryan said nothing.

Charles’s jaw tightened.

Claire remembered something suddenly.

Before the ceremony, Ryan had told her there was one document they needed to sign privately after the vows.

He called it a routine marital estate update.

Claire had not read it yet.

And now Ryan was looking toward the room where it waited.
