Chapter 14 - Claire Saw Diane Again at Another Wedding

Three years after the canceled ceremony, Claire attended Rebecca’s sister’s wedding in Maryland.

Rebecca invited her unexpectedly.

Claire almost declined.

Then went.

Diane was not there.

Ryan was not there.

Good.

The ceremony was small.

No mansion.

No dramatic family money.

Then halfway through the reception, Claire saw a floral dress across the lawn and froze.

Not Diane.

A stranger.

Same colors.

Same silhouette.

Her body reacted before her mind corrected it.

Claire stepped outside.

Rebecca followed.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“You don’t look okay.”

Claire laughed.

“Floral dress.”

Rebecca understood.

They stood quietly for a moment.

Then Rebecca said:

“I used to react to white shirts.”

Ryan’s favorite.

Claire looked at her.

“Does it stop?”

“It changes.”

“How?”

“Eventually the object stops being the memory every time.”

Claire thought about the SUV.

The dress.

The mansion.

The strap.

Objects did not need to disappear.

The nervous system simply needed enough new experiences.

Then Rebecca asked something Claire had never expected.

“Do you ever miss him?”

Claire answered honestly.

“Sometimes.”

Rebecca nodded.

“Me too, once.”

That did not mean they wanted Ryan back.

It meant relationships contain real attachment even when they become unsafe.

Then Rebecca said:

“Missing the person you thought you had isn’t the same as wanting the person who actually hurt you.”

Claire carried that sentence home.

Months later, she began dating again.

Slowly.

No grand rescue story.

No wealthy savior.

A civil engineer named Matthew whom she met through a preservation project.

On their fourth date, he asked why she ended her engagement.

Claire answered:

“He became abusive.”

Matthew did not ask:

“What did you do?”

Did not ask:

“How bad?”

Did not ask:

“Why didn’t you leave earlier?”

He said:

“I’m sorry.”

Then allowed Claire to decide whether to continue.

That simplicity felt almost suspicious.

Eventually it felt:

May you like

normal.
