Chapter 12 - Emily Did Not Come Home From the Hospital to the Same House
The temporary safety plan barred Michael from:
unsupervised contact with Emily
while the investigation proceeded.
I filed for:
a protective order
and:
temporary exclusive possession of the home.
Not automatically granted because I was angry.
Attorneys filed:
affidavits,
medical records,
hospital reports.
A judge reviewed:
evidence.
Michael moved into:
a furnished apartment.
Not jail.
Not homelessness.
A place.
I returned home with Emily after:
five nights.
She stood in the foyer.
Looked toward the kitchen.
Then froze.
The island was still there.
Of course it was.
Same granite corner.
Same stool.
Same refrigerator.
Emily whispered:
“I don’t want to go in there.”
I said:
“Okay.”
We ordered:
pizza
and ate upstairs.
The next day, I called a contractor.
Not to demolish the house.
I almost did.
Instead we replaced the island countertop with:
rounded edges
during an already planned kitchen update months later.
Why?
Not because granite caused:
the injury.
Because Emily asked.
That distinction mattered.
The house did not become:
safe
because Michael left.
Emily still checked:
locks,
windows,
driveway.
Trauma does not read:
court orders.
She began therapy.

Separately.
Good.
She needed one room in her life where she was not:
