Chapter 9 - Emily Had Been Keeping Notes

The surgery lasted just under:

two hours.

Doctors repaired a small bowel perforation and irrigated localized contamination before widespread infection developed.

No bowel resection beyond a very small repair.

No catastrophic organ damage.

No permanent disability expected.

Lucky.

That word made me furious.

Lucky should not be needed after:

a father shoves his daughter.

Emily remained hospitalized:

five nights.

During the second day, she asked:

“Can I have my backpack?”

My sister Jenny had brought it.

Inside was:

a spiral notebook.

Not a diary exactly.

Dates.

Short sentences.

March 8 — Dad grabbed my wrist when I wouldn’t give password.

April 21 — punched wall after report card.

May 4 — told Mom he never threatened me.

June 12 — took my phone all night because I asked to stay at Sophie’s.

August 3 — blocked door when I tried to go outside.

Then:

Sunday — pushed me into island. Mom asked. I said no.

I stared.

“Why did you write this?”

Emily looked away.

“Because Dad says things didn’t happen.”

Then:

“Sometimes you say you don’t remember either.”

That hurt.

Not accusation.

Observation.

I turned pages.

Most incidents were:

not physical.

Threats.

Yelling.

Control.

One note:

He says if I tell school counselor, they’ll make Mom choose between us.

I closed my eyes.

That was the real architecture of the family.

Michael had made disclosure feel like:

betrayal of me.

And I had unknowingly reinforced it every time I said:

May you like

“I don’t want this family torn apart.”
