Chapter 5 - Michael Started Calling Emily a Liar Before She Started Lying

At fourteen, Emily began pushing back.
Healthy.
Messy.
Teenage.
She discovered:
music Michael hated,
friends he distrusted,
clothes he considered inappropriate,
opinions he did not share.
Then she started lying sometimes.
About:
where she was,
who she texted,
whether homework was done.
Not good.
Not unusual.
Michael seized on it.
“You can’t believe anything she says.”
One lie became:
identity.
If Emily said:
“I forgot.”
Michael:
“Liar.”
If she said:
“I didn’t hear you.”
“Liar.”
If she said:
“I feel sick.”
“Convenient.”
Then one day Emily had a panic attack before school.
Shortness of breath.
Chest tightness.
Trembling.
I took her to urgent care.
Cardiac exam normal.
Doctor suggested:
anxiety assessment.
Michael was furious over the bill.
“She manipulated you.”
“She couldn’t breathe.”
“She got out of a math test.”
I said:
“You weren’t there.”
He answered:
“Exactly.”
Then:
“You fall for everything.”
That was how I became easier to control too.
Every time I believed Emily, Michael implied:
I was naïve.
Every time I challenged him, he framed it as:
Sarah undermining discipline.
Eventually I began asking Emily more skeptical questions before:
believing.
She noticed.
May you like
Of course she did.
