Chapter 14 - Ethan Became A Father Separately From Being My Husband

The divorce took almost eighteen months.
By then our newborn daughter was walking.
Ethan rented a house fifteen minutes away.
The children gradually established a schedule with him.
At first, I resented every overnight.
Then I watched something change.
Without Lauren.
Without the affair.
Without our marriage functioning as a battlefield.
Ethan started parenting rather than performing fatherhood inside a collapsing relationship.
He packed lunches.
Missed meetings for pediatric appointments.
Learned the baby’s bedtime routine.
Stopped calling me every time one child became difficult.
The older children remained angry.
They were allowed to be.
One evening our son told him:
“You chose Lauren when Mom was pregnant.”
Ethan did not correct the wording.
He answered:
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I was selfish.”
No speech.
No blaming loneliness.
Progress.
I did not fall back in love with him because he improved.
That was another lesson.
A person becoming better does not obligate the person they hurt to return.
Improvement can matter even when reconciliation does not happen.

Our marriage ended.
His fatherhood did not have to.
