Chapter 4 - Ethan Had Been Complaining To The Wrong Woman
Ethan’s affair began six months before I caught them.
That was his eventual admission.
It started during one of his business trips.
Then continued at hotels.
Her apartment.
Our estate when I was away.
I wish I could say the affair itself was the deepest betrayal.
It wasn’t.
Ethan had spent those same months discussing our marriage with Lauren in extraordinary detail.
He told her I was exhausted.
That I no longer wanted sex as often.
That pregnancy had made me “emotionally impossible.”
That my father interfered too much.
That the children came to me for everything.
That he felt like “a guest in his own family.”
Lauren listened.
Then gave those complaints structure.
“You sound shut out.”
“You’re carrying the whole marriage.”
“She uses the pregnancy to control everything.”
“Have you thought about what happens if this continues after the baby?”
Ethan told investigators later that he thought Lauren was merely validating him.
He did not understand that she was recording dates.
Saving messages.
Taking screenshots.
Building chronology.
That did not excuse him.
He was cheating on me.
He was handing another woman intimate information about my health and parenting.
But he had not yet asked anyone to take the children away.
Lauren was the one who crossed that line first.
The question became:
Why?
The answer was painfully simple.
She did not want to inherit an affair.
