Chapter 6 - Richard Found The Draft Because Lauren Made One Careless Mistake
Dad was not secretly searching Ethan’s computer.
He found the document because Lauren used the wrong printer.
Richard ran a private family office that handled several of my late mother’s trusts and my own premarital assets.
The office maintained a secure printing portal for outside counsel.
Months earlier, I had authorized Ethan to send estate-related documents through that portal when our home printer failed.
His credentials remained active.
Lauren used Ethan’s laptop while he was showering at a hotel.
She sent the custody draft to what she thought was his office printer.
The saved destination was my family office.
The document arrived in a secure queue tagged with Ethan’s account.
Normally, nobody would have opened it without authorization.
But the title included my full legal name and the words parental fitness.
Dad’s office administrator flagged it as potentially misdirected legal correspondence involving a family beneficiary.
Richard called me.
I was driving back from Boston and did not answer.
Then he called Ethan.
No answer.
So he contacted the attorney whose metadata appeared on the draft.
That conversation changed everything.
The lawyer said no petition had been filed.
No court action existed.
He had been contacted for a hypothetical consultation regarding a “family friend” and had prepared only a preliminary discussion draft based on information provided to him.
By whom?
Lauren Blake.
Not Ethan.
That was why Dad came to dinner instead of calling the police.
Nothing criminal had occurred simply because a lawyer drafted a petition.
But Dad needed to know whether Ethan was involved.
