Chapter 11 - Daniel Did Not File Because He Had Another Woman—He Filed Because He Wanted Out From Under My Money

There was no mistress.
No second apartment.
No secret fiancée.
That almost made the truth worse.
Daniel filed because he had come to hate:
our marriage.
And he had been too cowardly to say so before the paperwork existed.
During mediation, I asked:
“When did you decide?”
“Six months ago.”
Before pregnancy.
Before the ultrasound.
Before the restaurant.
“Why?”
He stared at the table.
“I felt like an employee.”
“Of me?”
“Yes.”
I almost laughed.
Then stopped.
He continued.
“Every decision came down to whether you approved the money.”
“That’s because you were asking for money.”
“Not always.”
He had examples.
Vacation.
I rejected Italy because Vanessa had just asked for tuition and I was resentful about spending.
House renovation.
I delayed because I believed his commission year was weak.
Investment risk.
I said:
“No.”
Sometimes my reasoning was sound.
The way I communicated it?
Not always.
Then he said:
“I hated needing your income to keep promises I made to my sister.”
There.
“Then stop making promises with my income.”
“I know.”
“Now.”
He nodded.
“I know now.”
Then:
“Why the cruelty?”
The slap.
Useful.
Not worth staying married to.
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“Because I wanted you hurt before you could make me feel small.”
That was not an excuse.
It was the truth.
“And Vanessa?”
“I shouldn’t have brought her.”
“Why did you?”
“Because I knew I’d back out if I came alone.”
There.
Cowardice again.
He used his sister as:
reinforcement.
Then he admitted something else.
He believed the divorce settlement would give him enough:
marital assets
to continue helping Vanessa for a while.
Not because he expected:
half my future salary.
He understood law better than that.
But we had:
home equity,
investment accounts,
retirement balances,
cash.
A real marital estate.
He assumed his fair share would become:
his freedom.
Maybe it would.
That was his right.
What he failed to understand was that divorce did not transform my ongoing earnings into:
Vanessa’s safety net.
Then:
“I didn’t know you were pregnant.”
“I know.”
Daniel cried.
I did not comfort him.
May you like
That was new.
