Chapter 14 - Lucas Graduated Without Becoming Anyone’s Financial Heir

Lucas graduated from high school three years after the steakhouse.
I went.
Vanessa invited me.
More importantly:
Lucas did.
By then he was eighteen.
Tall.
Funny.
Far more emotionally intelligent than the adults who had spent his adolescence arguing about what he “deserved.”
He had been accepted to:
three colleges.
Chose a state university with a strong digital-design program.
Good aid.
Reasonable cost.
Vanessa paid:
part.
Eric paid:
part under their agreement.
Lucas received:
scholarship money.
I gave him a graduation gift.
Not four years of tuition.
A gift.
He hugged me.
“Thank you for keeping me at Hawthorne.”
“That was a promise.”
He looked at me.
“Mom says you didn’t have to.”
“Legally?”
“No.”
“Morally?”
“I think I did.”
Lucas nodded.
Then:
“I’m glad you stopped paying for everything else.”
I laughed.
“Why?”
“Mom got less weird.”
Vanessa heard from nearby.
“Excuse me?”
Lucas smiled.
“You did.”
She rolled her eyes.
Then laughed too.
That moment would have been impossible three years earlier.
Vanessa later told me returning to full-time work had been:
terrifying.
Then:
good.
She was promoted to project director.
Not a miracle.
Career rebuilding in her forties.
Some months tight.
Still hers.
Daniel remained in Lucas’s life as:
uncle.
He helped sometimes.
With:
time,
advice,
occasional gifts
from his own budget.
Not:
Rachel’s bonus.
That distinction repaired something between brother and sister too.
Daniel had spent years proving love by:
providing resources he did not entirely control.
Now if he wanted to help:
he helped.
If he could not:
he said no.
Vanessa learned to hear:
no
without translating it into:
abandonment.
Most of the time.
