Chapter 11 - The Recording Was Useful, but Ryan’s Own Videos Were Worse
The hidden-phone recording mattered.
It captured:
Judith ordering me to swallow,
threatening that the night would hurt worse,
Ryan mocking me,
my choking,
door shutting.
But audio alone did not prove:
every prior incident.
It did not need to.
Investigators found other evidence.
Ryan’s social-media archive had not vanished when he deleted the app.
Platform records preserved:
uploads,
captions,
dates.
His cloud backup contained:
raw videos.
Those were more revealing.
Because raw footage included:
before
and:
after.
One clip began with Judith saying:
“If she refuses again, hold her shoulders.”
Then Ryan started filming.
Another showed the attic door closing.
Then Ryan telling his phone:
“Mom says she needs a reset upstairs.”
Another included:
my voice behind the door:
“Ryan, open this.”
He laughed quietly.
Then stopped recording.
There were text messages between:
Ryan and Judith.
She keeps trying to control meals.
Lock the pantry.
She says she’s leaving tomorrow.
Don’t give her car keys until she calms down.
Then:
Her sister is calling too much.
Take the phone tonight.
This was no longer:
one bad afternoon.
It was a pattern.
The hidden recording did not create the case.
It gave me enough confidence to escape.
Ironically, Ryan had built much of the evidentiary record himself because he was obsessed with proving:
I was the unstable one.
