Chapter 5 - Ryan Started Filming Me Because He Said Doctors Needed Proof

The first video seemed harmless.
I was sitting at the kitchen table.
Plate untouched.
Ryan said:
“Can I record this?”
“Why?”
“So we can show Dr. Patel how bad meals still are.”
I agreed.
He filmed:
two minutes.
At the appointment, he showed:
thirty seconds.
My doctor asked:
“Emma, what happens when you try to eat?”
I explained.
Useful.
Then Ryan filmed again.
And again.
Soon he stopped asking.
If I cried:
camera.
If I refused Judith’s protein shake:
camera.
If I vomited:
sometimes camera.
I snapped once:
“Put the damn phone away.”
Ryan filmed that too.
Then showed Judith.
“She’s getting aggressive.”
I stared.
“You were recording me throwing up.”
Judith answered:
“We need documentation.”
“For who?”
“Doctors.”
But no doctor had requested:
daily surveillance.
Then I discovered Ryan had sent one clip to:
his brother.
Caption:
Pregnancy has turned my wife into a hostage negotiator over toast.
His brother responded with:
laughing emojis.
I was furious.
Ryan called it:
a joke.
I demanded:
“Delete it.”
He did.
Or said he did.
Then apologized.
I stayed.
Because:
we were married,
I was pregnant,
and one humiliating video did not make someone:
dangerous.
That was true.

It was also the first point where I began adapting to behavior that should have triggered a larger conversation.
