Chapter 1 - The Question That Stopped The Room

Warm afternoon light spilled through the tall garden windows of the Maine coastal estate conservatory lounge, turning the pale oak floor almost golden. The room looked too elegant for what was happening inside it—cream cabinetry, a long upholstered bench, French doors standing open to the salt air, and a wall-mounted landline near the far corner.

Liam grabbed Olivia from behind and roughly shoved her down.

She lost her balance and fell sideways onto the wooden floor, stunned but uninjured. Before she could push herself back up, he was already towering over her, his face twisted with anger.

“You’re finished in this family!”

A few paces away, Patricia stood watching with a glass of red wine in her hand, perfectly calm, making no move to help her daughter-in-law.

Emily saw her mother on the floor and panicked. The little girl dashed across the room in pink pajamas, reached the wall phone with trembling hands, and dialed from memory.

“Grandpa... please come quickly!”

Olivia barely had time to realize what Emily had done before Liam turned as if he meant to go after the child. Still on the floor, Olivia lunged forward and grabbed his pant leg and ankle with both hands, holding him there for one desperate second. Liam looked down at her with pure rage, but she refused to let go.

Then the French doors flew open.

Henry Miller strode in with two silent aides behind him. He saw Olivia on the floor, saw her hands gripping Liam’s leg, and his face changed so fast it almost didn’t look human. Fury took over.

“Get away from my daughter!”

He marched straight toward Liam.

Liam turned just in time to see him.

Henry stepped forward and drove one hard punch into him. Liam flew backward and crashed hard onto the long upholstered bench, his upper body slamming into the seat before he collapsed across it, stunned.

That was when Patricia tried to leave.

Henry saw her turn with her wineglass still in hand. He caught her wrist from behind before she got two full steps. She spun around, startled, and the glass slipped from her fingers, shattered against the floor, and bled red wine across the boards.

Henry stood face-to-face with her, still gripping her wrist.

“Now tell me why you wanted to get rid of my daughter!”

For the first time that afternoon, Patricia’s composure broke.

Her eyes widened.

And the whole room fell silent before she answered.

She never got the chance.
