Patricia liked to behave as if Olivia disgusted her because she wasn’t tough enough for the Carter family.

She dressed beautifully, knew every donor by name, and could talk a reluctant lender into extending a deadline with nothing but a thin smile and a promise. Olivia never made that mistake.

She saw early that Patricia’s real skill was controlling the story. If revenue dipped, she blamed the season. If vendors complained, they were disloyal. If Liam buckled under pressure, she called it devotion. And if Olivia questioned anything, Patricia described her as emotional, sensitive, or ungrateful.

At first the cruelty stayed subtle. Patricia ignored Olivia’s suggestions in meetings, then presented them later as her own. She openly doted on Emily in public but made comments in private about Olivia being “too soft” as a mother. When Liam failed to shut those things down firmly, Olivia told herself he was overwhelmed, not complicit.

That was her blind spot.

The situation worsened after Henry’s bridge loan gave Olivia formal authority in the family business structure. Patricia viewed every one of Olivia’s approvals as a humiliation. The younger woman wasn’t simply married to Liam; she now had actual power to slow, question, or reject decisions Patricia wanted rushed through.

That made Olivia intolerable.

Patricia could live with debt. She could live with pressure. She could even live with owing Henry money.

What she could not live with was owing him money while his daughter had the contractual power to expose what Patricia was doing with it.
