Chapter 6 - The Signature Patricia Needed
By the following Monday, the situation had become painfully clear.
The Carter entities needed two things almost immediately: Henry’s family office had to agree not to accelerate the existing bridge loan, and the regional lender needed management approval for the proposed refinance package. That package included new guarantees, fresh operating restrictions, and disclosure schedules that would not survive serious scrutiny unless the old misuse was fully disclosed first.
Patricia wanted speed.
Olivia wanted the truth.
That difference turned into war.
Patricia called Olivia into the library and laid the signature packet in front of her as if it were a routine housekeeping matter. There was the draft lender consent, the management committee resolution, and a spousal acknowledgment tied to the estate entity.
“Sign it,” Patricia said.
Olivia read every page anyway.
No proper explanation of the related-party payments.
No meaningful disclosure of the reporting problems.
No commitment to independent review.
Just a quiet attempt to roll past the mess and lock new financing in place before anyone outside the family asked the right questions.
“I’m not signing this,” Olivia said.
Patricia didn’t even blink. “Then you are choosing to destroy this family.”
“No,” Olivia replied. “I’m refusing to lie for it.”
Liam came in halfway through the argument. Patricia immediately shifted tone and made it sound as though Olivia was sabotaging the family out of pride. Liam took his mother’s side faster than Olivia was prepared for.
“You know what happens if this falls apart,” he said.
“Yes,” Olivia answered. “And I also know what happens if I sign something false.”
“It isn’t false.”
“Then put the full related-party schedules in the package.”
Silence.
“Show Henry the personal reimbursements. Show the lender the cottage contractor invoices. Explain why your mother’s LLC is being paid while you’re asking for new forbearance. Then I’ll discuss it.”
Patricia’s face hardened.
From that moment on, Olivia ceased being someone they needed to persuade.
