Chapter 2 - Five Sterling Brothers

The ballroom went silent.
Not because everyone knew who Sebastian was.
Most of them did not.
That was the point.
For seven years, I had let Julian tell people I came from “a complicated family situation.”
For seven years, I had let his friends assume I had married up.
For seven years, I had let his mother call me “grateful” and his colleagues call me “quiet” and Khloe call me “forgettable.”
I had done it because I wanted peace.
Because I wanted Lily to have a father.
Because I believed if I made myself small enough, Julian would stop trying to crush what was left.
But there is no small enough for a man who needs your silence to feel powerful.
At the far end of the ballroom, beyond the arched doorway, movement appeared.
The camera of every phone in the room followed before the guests understood why.
Sebastian entered first.
My eldest brother.
Forty-two.
Tall.
Muscular.
Perfectly tailored black suit.
White shirt.
Black tie.
Clean-shaven face carved into the kind of calm that made dangerous men rethink their plans.
Behind him came the other four Sterling brothers.
Nathaniel.
Callum.
Everett.
Grant.
All in dark formal suits.
All tall.
All controlled.
All moving together with the quiet authority of men who had been trained since childhood never to rush when fury was already enough.
Guests stepped aside automatically.
No one told them to.
They just did.
Julian froze.
Khloe took one involuntary step backward.
Then two police officers moved through the side entrance.
Someone had called them after the slap.
Or maybe one of Sebastian’s people had.
I would not know until later.
All I knew was that for the first time that night, Julian was no longer the largest threat in the room.
He tried to advance toward me anyway.
Bad instinct.
Two officers caught both of his arms and held him in place before he reached the cake table.
“Let go of me,” Julian snapped.
One officer said, “Stay where you are.”
At the same moment, Sebastian reached me.
He did not ask what happened first.
He looked at Lily.
Then at the mark on my cheek.
Then at the faint red line visible across my shoulder where my gown had shifted.
His face did not change.
That was how I knew he was furious.
“Serena,” he said.
Just my name.
I almost collapsed.
Not from weakness.
From recognition.
For so long, inside Julian’s house, I had been wife.
Problem.
Mother.
Burden.
Embarrassment.
Asset.
Mistake.
Hearing my name in my brother’s voice made my knees give way.
Sebastian caught me before I fell.
He lifted me securely into his arms as if I were still the little sister who used to fall asleep during board meetings in our father’s office.
One of my brothers, Callum, crouched beside Lily.
He did not grab her.
Did not rush her.
He lowered himself carefully, one hand open.
“Hey, bug,” he said softly. “Can I stand with you?”
Lily looked at me.
I nodded.
She ran into his arms, stuffed rabbit crushed between them.
Callum lifted her and moved her behind the line of brothers, away from Julian, away from Khloe, away from every adult who had just failed her.
Sebastian turned toward me.
His voice was cold.
Controlled.
“Which one of them touched you?”
Julian struggled once against the officers.
Then stopped.
Because all five brothers looked at him.
Not dramatically.
Not loudly.
Just looked.
The kind of look that does not promise violence.
May you like
It promises consequences.
Khloe’s face lost all color.
