Chapter 5 - Leverage

Khloe arrived after Lily turned three.
She was introduced as a client.
Then as a friend.
Then as “basically family.”
I saw what she was before Julian admitted anything.
The touching.
The inside jokes.
The way she spoke to my staff.
The way she looked at Lily like my daughter was a decorative inconvenience.
One night, after a dinner where Khloe wore my favorite perfume and sat in my chair, I asked Julian if he was having an affair.
He looked offended.
Not guilty.
Offended.
“You’re becoming exactly what your brothers expect women to be.”
“What does that mean?”
“Suspicious. Controlling. Obsessed with power.”
I stared at him.
“I asked a question.”
“And I’m telling you this is why I don’t want Sterling toxicity around my daughter.”
My daughter.
Not our.
His mistake.
But I was too tired then to use it.
A month later, I found the first message.
Julian to Khloe:
She’ll never leave. She’d have to admit Sebastian was right.
Khloe:
Then make her behave.
Julian:
Working on it.
I should have called my brothers that night.
Instead, I took screenshots and hid them.
That became my new life.
Evidence in silence.
Photos of bruises I explained as clumsiness.
Messages forwarded to a private account.
Audio recordings of Julian calling me unstable.
Bank statements showing money moving from Lily’s education account into an investment vehicle I had never approved.
Khloe’s messages telling Julian to “make Serena sign before the trust audit.”
That was when the truth sharpened.
The affair hurt.
The money frightened me.
Julian was not only cheating.
He was planning.
He wanted access to a portion of my private inheritance before my brothers’ annual review of Lily’s trust structure.
He had told Khloe that once I signed the “family financial simplification” documents, he could move funds into a Vance-controlled entity under the argument that it benefited our household.
Then, if I left, he would frame me as mentally unstable, reckless with family money, and emotionally unfit after years of “refusing support.”
Khloe’s reply:
And Lily?
Julian:
Leverage.
I vomited after reading that.
Not a metaphor.
Actually.
In the bathroom with the door locked and Lily sleeping down the hall, I vomited until my throat burned.
Then I called Sebastian.
I did not tell him everything.
Not yet.
I said, “I may need help soon.”
There was a pause.
Then my brother’s voice, dangerously gentle.
“How soon?”
“I don’t know.”
“Are you safe tonight?”
I looked at the bathroom door.
“I think so.”
“That is not an answer.”
“It’s the only one I have.”
He breathed once.
“Send me everything.”
I did.
Not all at once.
But enough.
The next morning, a new phone arrived by courier hidden inside a cosmetics box.
A message from Grant:
Use this when ready. Not before. We are watching exits, not entering unless you say.
That was the difference between my brothers and Julian.

Julian called control protection.
My brothers knew protection asked permission, even when it hurt them.
