Chapter 3 - The Black Folder

I rested weakly against Sebastian’s chest and slowly raised one trembling finger.
First toward Julian.
Then toward Khloe.
My mouth opened.
The command was there.
The words I had swallowed for years.
Expose them.
End him.
Take Lily out.
Call the board.
Open the folder.
Show everyone.
Destroy the lie.
But then I saw Lily watching me from behind Callum’s shoulder.
My daughter’s eyes were wet.
Terrified.
Still trusting me to decide what kind of world she was standing in.
So I paused.
That pause saved me from becoming what Julian always said I was.
Not hysterical.
Not vindictive.
Not reckless.
A mother.
A Sterling.
A woman who finally understood that power is not proven by how loudly you use it.
Power is choosing the first word carefully because a child will remember it.
Sebastian tightened his grip around me.
The sealed black folder under his arm pressed against my side.
Julian stared at that folder.
He knew.
Maybe not everything.
But enough.
Enough to know the documents inside were not birthday party paperwork.
Enough to know the family he had mocked as “estranged” had been watching longer than he thought.
Enough to know Serena Sterling had not called for rescue.
She had called off protection.
And that was different.
Seven years earlier, Julian Vance had loved the version of me who did not bring my brothers into rooms.
That was what I told myself.
But now, looking back, I think he loved the absence more than the woman.
He loved that I came alone.
He loved that I refused security.
Loved that I paid cash for ordinary things and wore simple dresses and never corrected people when they assumed Sterling was just a last name.
He loved that I wanted to be normal so badly I ignored every sign that he wanted me isolated.
We met at a hospital fundraiser in Boston.
Julian was charming then.
Not charming like a movie villain.
That would have been easier.
He was warm.
Funny.
Self-deprecating.
He made fun of wealthy donors while wearing shoes that cost more than my first car.
He told me he admired women who did not need attention.
“You don’t act like a Sterling,” he said on our third date.
I should have heard the warning.
Instead, I smiled.
“What does a Sterling act like?”
He shrugged.
“Untouchable.”
May you like
I thought he meant powerful.
Now I know he meant difficult to control.
