Chapter 11 - THE PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR

The investigator’s name was Caleb Ross.

Former insurance adjuster.

Licensed private investigator.

He did not apologize for taking the job.

“I was hired legally.”

“By Eleanor?”

“Yes.”

“What were you asked to find?”

“Evidence you were having an affair, abusing substances, hiding money, or planning to move company assets.”

None existed.

So Caleb documented ordinary life.

Office.

Gym.

Lunch with Sophie.

Therapy.

A glass of wine at a charity event.

Dinner with my father.

Then Eleanor started asking for “stronger interpretation.”

Caleb showed Maya the emails.

Eleanor:

Can you frame the therapy visits as instability?

Caleb:

I document facts.

Eleanor:

Then find facts useful to us.

He refused.

Then Nathan contacted him directly.

Message:

If Claire is seeing anyone, I need proof before mediation.

Caleb found nothing.

Then:

Can you confirm she drinks during business hours?

No.

Then:

Can you confirm she moved money after separation?

No.

Nathan was shopping for a narrative.

Not facts.

Caleb eventually quit the assignment.

Why talk now?

Because Eleanor’s lawyer sent him a draft affidavit describing things he had never said.

He refused to sign.

That line mattered.

Another person who finally said no.

Then Caleb played a recording from a meeting with Eleanor.

He had recorded because state law permitted one-party consent in that context.

Eleanor:

Claire is emotional. Courts understand emotional women.

Caleb:

I don’t testify to stereotypes.

Eleanor:

Then say she’s erratic.

Caleb:

Is she?

Silence.

Then:

She will be once Nathan applies pressure.

My body went cold.

Not observation.

Prediction.

Intent.

Eleanor expected Nathan’s pressure to create the behavior they would later use against me.

That was the system.

Corner someone.

Then point at panic as evidence they are unstable.

Then Caleb played another clip.

Nathan:

If she loses the board, she’ll settle.

Caleb:

You want her removed?

Nathan:

Temporarily. Just enough to make her reasonable.

Reasonable.

The word people use when they mean compliant.

Maya asked:

“Did you know about the forged postnup?”

Caleb said no.

“Did you know Nathan hit Claire?”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“If I had, I’d have ended the assignment immediately.”

I believed him.

Then he handed us surveillance photos.

One showed Eleanor meeting Melissa Drake, the notary on the forged postnup.

Another showed Nathan there too.

Date:

Three days before the document was created.

The family had met before the forgery.

The postnup was not Nathan acting alone in secret.

Eleanor knew.

The civil case was about to become much larger.
