Chapter 2 - THE SECOND SLAP

I straightened slowly.
One hand pressed against my cheek.
Eleanor stayed seated.
“Apologize,” she said, “or get the hell out of this family.”
I looked at her.
Not Nathan.
Her.
Because she had not flinched when he hit me.
Neither had Derek.
Neither had Vanessa.
That mattered.
Violence had not shocked them.
My refusal had.
Nathan stepped closer.
“You heard Mom.”
I said:
“I heard all of you.”
He slapped me again.
My balance disappeared.
I dropped beside the table.
My handbag fell open.
Keys.
Wallet.
Lipstick.
Everything scattered across the hardwood.
Nathan stood over me.
“You’re still talking back?”
Vanessa calmly bent down.
Picked up my lipstick.
Held it toward me with a small smile.
“Fix your face. Then transfer the money.”
Something inside me went cold.
Not numb.
Clear.
I looked around the room.
Five people.
One family.
Not one person had said stop.
I stood.
Took the lipstick from Vanessa.
Then slammed it onto the dining table.
Everyone flinched.
I looked at Nathan.
“I’m not your wife.”
Pause.
“I’m your fucking ATM.”
His jaw tightened.
He raised his hand again.
Third slap coming.
I did not move.
I smiled.
“And your ATM just shut down.”
Nathan froze.
Eleanor’s face changed.
That was the first visible fear of the night.
Not because she cared about me.
Because she understood money had just become uncertain.
My phone rang.
Sophie.
I answered on speaker.
“Claire, the freezes are active.”
Nathan lowered his hand.
“What freezes?”
Sophie continued.
“Every card under your personal authority. The joint household account is restricted pending review. I also blocked the $250,000 capital request.”
Eleanor stood.
“You did what?”
I looked at her.
“I stopped paying.”
Nathan lunged for my phone.
I stepped back.
Not fast.
Deliberate.
“Touch me again and this becomes a police report.”
His face darkened.
Vanessa said:
“You wouldn’t.”
I looked at my bruised cheek reflected in the black screen of my phone.
“I should have already.”
Then Sophie said:
“There’s another problem.”
“What?”
“The Morgan corporate account tried to charge your Amex for thirty-seven thousand dollars at 6:14 tonight.”
Everyone went silent.
I looked at Nathan.
He looked at Eleanor.
That look told me he had not known.
Interesting.
“Who tried it?” I asked.
Sophie answered:
“User credentials belong to Eleanor Morgan.”
The room changed.
Nathan turned toward his mother.
“Mom?”
May you like
Eleanor said nothing.
For the first time, the family looked fractured instead of united.
