Chapter 8 - VANESSA’S SECRET

Vanessa contacted me through her lawyer.

She wanted immunity from my civil claims in exchange for documents.

I refused immunity.

Maya offered limited settlement discussion instead.

Vanessa agreed.

We met.

She looked different without the family dinner performance.

Less smug.

More scared.

She admitted building the post-divorce spreadsheet.

“Why?”

“Mom asked.”

“You could have said no.”

“Yes.”

Good.

No excuses.

Then she admitted the hidden mansion was hers.

Or supposed to become hers.

Morgan Family Holdings bought it through VGM Properties because Vanessa could not qualify for financing after her divorce.

My money indirectly supported the mortgage.

“Did you know?”

“That your money was involved? Eventually.”

“How eventually?”

“After the second payment.”

“And you stayed quiet.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“Why help them target my company?”

She started crying.

“I thought you’d leave Nathan eventually.”

“That is not an answer.”

“I thought if you did, he should get something.”

“He gets what the prenup says.”

“I know.”

“Then why forge?”

“I didn’t forge.”

“Nathan did.”

“Yes.”

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

There it was.

Then she handed over her laptop backup.

It contained the family budget.

The divorce plan.

And one folder called CLAIRE LEVERAGE.

My blood ran cold.

Inside:

Screenshots of arguments.

Photos of me drinking wine at events.

A prescription bottle photographed in my bathroom.

Calendar records showing therapy appointments.

Why?

To build a narrative.

Unstable.

Stressed.

Drinking.

Medicated.

Emotionally volatile.

None of it proved anything.

Together, framed selectively, it could be used in a divorce smear.

Vanessa said:

“Mom wanted options.”

Options.

The Morgan family’s favorite word for control.

Then one document went further.

Draft board complaint alleging I was mentally unfit to run my company.

If filed, it could trigger emergency review under our bylaws.

Not remove me automatically.

Create chaos.

That was the plan.

Pressure me financially.

Threaten reputation.

Force settlement.

Then Maya asked:

“Who drafted the board complaint?”

Vanessa whispered:

“Nathan.”

The family did not merely expect my money.

My husband had prepared to attack my competence if I ever stopped giving it.
