Chapter 2 - The Video I Was Never Supposed to See

I took Noah upstairs first.

Not because I was calm.

Because if I had stayed in that kitchen any longer, I might have done something that would have made Ryan and Diane forget what they had done and start talking only about me.

I locked myself in the guest room, wrapped Noah in a blanket, and cleaned sauce out of his hair while he clung to me with one sticky hand.

“It was cold,” he whispered.

My throat tightened. “Did Grandma put you in there?”

He nodded against my shoulder.

“Did Daddy see?”

That took longer.

Then he nodded again.

I almost couldn’t breathe.

My phone was still in my hand. The kitchen motion alert had come from the small camera Ryan himself had agreed to install months earlier after Noah once wandered too close to the stove. We barely used the app. I had almost forgotten it was there.

With Noah in my lap, I opened the recording.

The clip began with Diane already furious. Noah stood near the refrigerator, crying. He had apparently taken a cookie and then reached for leftovers from the counter. Diane yanked the refrigerator door open, shoved him inside, grabbed the same plate of leftovers, and flung it straight at him.

Then she slammed the door.

Ryan was visible in the frame the entire time.

He stood beside the island.

He didn’t shout.

Didn’t reach for her.

Didn’t move.

He just watched.

I replayed that part three times because my brain kept insisting I must have missed something—that maybe he had frozen for one second, maybe he had stepped in right before I entered.

But no.

He had stood there and watched his mother shove our four-year-old son into a refrigerator.

Noah looked up at me with swollen red eyes.

“Daddy saw,” he whispered again, as if trying to help me understand something I had failed to grasp the first time.

Then he added, in the saddest little voice I had ever heard:

“Grandma said he knows how to make bad boys listen.”

That sentence landed somewhere deep and dark.

I paused the video and stared at Diane’s face frozen on the screen.

Not just cruel.

Certain.

Certain Ryan would not stop her.

Certain Noah’s terror was normal.

Certain she had done something like this before.

And suddenly my anger cracked open into something colder.

This had not been a random explosion.

May you like

This had history.
