Chapter 9 - The Choice I Gave Ryan Was Brutal Because It Had to Be

That night, after Diane finally left under Ryan’s direct order, I told him the truth I had been trying to avoid.
“I can protect Noah,” I said. “But I cannot protect him and carry you through this at the same time.”
He sat on the far end of the couch, staring at the floor.
I laid everything out: the kitchen footage, Noah’s statements, Ryan’s journal, Sylvia’s letters, the fresh recording of Diane admitting he had “survived worse.”
Then I gave him a choice.
Not between me and Diane in some childish emotional sense.
A real choice.
“I need you to do three things,” I said.
He looked up.
“First, you make a full statement—written and signed—about what your mother did to you as a child and what you saw her do to Noah.”
He nodded once.
“Second, you go with me to file for a protective order keeping Diane away from our son.”
A longer pause.
Then another nod.
“Third, you start trauma therapy immediately. Not next month. Not when things calm down. Now.”
He swallowed.
“And if I do all that?”
“That doesn’t erase what happened.”
His eyes filled then, but he didn’t interrupt.
“It means you are finally choosing to be Noah’s father instead of Diane’s frightened son.”
He covered his face with both hands.
I let him sit there.
After a while he whispered, “If I do this, she’ll tell everyone I’m lying.”
“She’s been doing that your whole life.”
He dropped his hands.
I held his gaze and said the hardest thing I had ever had to say to my husband:
“You don’t need to convince me she hurt you. You need to decide whether you’re willing to let her keep hurting our child because you’re still waiting for her to love you.”
He broke at that.
Not dramatically.
Just quietly.
May you like
Like something old inside him had finally stopped pretending it could survive unchanged.
