Chapter 8 - Diane Came to My House Like She Was the Victim

I had told Ryan clearly that Diane was not allowed near Noah.

Two days later, she let herself in through the back door with her own key.

I found her standing in my kitchen as if she still belonged there.

Noah saw her first and began shaking so hard he dropped the toy truck in his hand.

That alone told me what I needed to know.

I moved between them.

“You need to leave.”

Diane crossed her arms. “I came to speak to my grandson.”

“No. You came because you think if you keep acting superior long enough, this becomes a misunderstanding.”

Ryan entered from the hallway behind her. He had heard raised voices. The second he saw his mother, something in his face hardened in a way I had never witnessed before.

“You were told not to come here.”

Diane looked genuinely offended.

“So now I need permission to see my own family?”

“You shoved Noah into a refrigerator.”

“I disciplined a spoiled child.”

Noah whimpered behind me.

Ryan visibly flinched.

Then Diane said the one thing she should never have said out loud.

“You survived worse and you turned out fine.”

The room went silent.

She realized too late what she had admitted.

Ryan stared at her as if the air had been knocked out of him.

“You really think I turned out fine?”

Her chin lifted. “I think your wife is making you weak.”

I had my phone in my pocket, recording the entire exchange.

Not because I was clever.

Because I had learned that people like Diane were never more dangerous than when they were certain they were right.

Ryan stepped forward.

For once, he did not sound frightened. He sounded sick.

“You don’t get to say what made me weak.”

May you like

And for the first time since I had known him, I watched my husband hold his mother’s gaze without looking away.
