Chapter 1 - The camera Judith forgot about

Warm afternoon sunlight covered the back garden of the Parker family’s seaside estate, bright against the white-stone patio, trimmed hedges, and blue water of the swimming pool.
Rachel Parker stepped through the tall glass doors carrying eight-month-old Liam tightly against her chest.
She had barely crossed onto the patio when Judith Parker came toward her.
Judith’s blonde hair was pinned into an elegant bun. Her cream designer dress looked immaculate. Nothing about her appearance suggested what happened next.
She grabbed Liam.
Rachel instinctively tightened her arms.
“Judith, what are you—”
Judith violently yanked the baby free.
Liam startled and began crying.
Before Rachel could reach for him again, Judith slapped her hard across the face.
Rachel fell backward onto the grass.
Judith looked down at her.
“YOU’RE NOTHING BUT THE WOMAN WHO GAVE BIRTH TO HIM. HE’S MINE.”
Rachel stared up in horror.
Judith turned toward the black stroller parked near the pool.
She roughly put Liam into it.
Then shoved.
Hard.
The stroller shot across the patio.
“NO!”
Rachel scrambled up too late.
The stroller went straight over the pool edge.
A huge splash exploded across the water.
“LIAM!”
Rachel screamed so loudly the sound carried through the house.
The glass doors flew open.
Ethan Parker ran outside.
He saw the stroller in the pool.
He did not ask questions.
He sprinted forward and dove into the water.
Within seconds he reached the stroller, lifted Liam safely free, and came up at the pool edge holding his son tightly against his chest.
Liam was wet and crying but conscious.
Rachel staggered toward them.
Judith’s face changed instantly.
The viciousness disappeared.
She pointed at Rachel.
“SHE LET HIM FALL IN. THIS WAS HER FAULT.”
Ethan was soaking wet, breathing hard, adrenaline still controlling every movement.
He looked at the stroller.
At Liam.
Then at Rachel.
“What the hell happened?”
Rachel opened her mouth.
Judith cut in.
“She wasn’t watching him!”
Ethan turned toward his wife.
And before Rachel could get a word out, he slapped her.
Hard.
Rachel’s head snapped sideways.
She stumbled backward.
For several seconds, she simply stared at her husband.
Not angry.
Broken.
Ethan still held Liam against his chest.
Rachel clutched her cheek.
Then something changed in her face.
She looked above Ethan’s shoulder.
Toward the house.
Slowly, with a trembling arm, she pointed upward.
Ethan followed the direction of her finger.
High on the exterior wall was a small security camera overlooking the garden and pool.
Judith saw it too.
The color left her face.
Ethan looked from the camera to his mother.
Then back to Rachel.
His breathing slowed.
Judith stopped speaking.
And in that silence, Ethan understood that one of the two women in front of him was terrified of what that camera had seen.
May you like
It wasn’t Rachel.
