Chapter 10 - Ethan apologized without asking Rachel to come back
Ethan waited nearly six weeks before giving Rachel a full apology.
He had said “I’m sorry” sooner.
Several times.
Those words were not enough.
The real conversation happened in their marriage counselor’s office.
Rachel sat across from him.
Liam was with Megan.
Ethan brought no gifts.
No speech prepared by a lawyer.
He looked directly at Rachel.
“I hit you because I believed my mother before I gave you one sentence.”
Rachel said nothing.
“I can say I was terrified for Liam. That’s true. I can say she manipulated me. That’s true too.”
He paused.
“But neither truth made my hand move. I did that.”
Rachel’s eyes filled.
Ethan continued.
“I also spent months helping her make you doubt yourself because I treated her reports like facts and your objections like emotions.”
Rachel looked down.
“I don’t need you to forgive me today.”
That got her attention.
“I’m not asking you to move home.”
He swallowed.
“I’m telling you what I did because whether our marriage survives or not, I need to stop making my mother responsible for choices that were mine.”
Rachel cried quietly.
Then said, “Do you know what hurt more than the slap?”
Ethan waited.
“That for maybe three seconds after you hit me, I wondered if she was right.”
His face changed.
Rachel continued.
“I wondered if I really had done something. If I somehow lost track of Liam. Because you looked at me with so much certainty.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
That was the damage manipulation caused when it lasted long enough.
It did not only make Ethan doubt Rachel.
It taught Rachel to doubt herself.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
This time the sentence landed differently.
Not because it repaired everything.
Because it accurately belonged to him.
Rachel did not agree to reconcile that day.
She did agree to keep attending counseling.
That was all.
And for the first time in their marriage, Ethan understood that patience was not passive.
