Chapter 11 - Judith’s case was serious without becoming theatrical
Judith faced criminal charges stemming from the garden incident.
The precise legal case did not require anyone to claim she intended to kill Liam.
Investigators did not believe they could prove that.
What they could prove was that she intentionally used force against Rachel, placed Liam into the stroller, deliberately propelled the stroller toward the pool, and immediately lied about who caused the incident.
The baby’s age and vulnerability mattered enormously.
So did the surveillance footage.
Grace notes—no, different family. Here the household staff and security technician authenticated the recording system.
Judith’s defense attorney explored whether the footage could be misleading or incomplete.
It wasn’t.
The camera had run continuously.
No edit.
No missing interval.
No mystery angle.
Just an ugly event recorded clearly.
Rachel’s slap by Ethan was handled separately.
His cooperation and immediate admission mattered, but they did not erase the conduct.
The incident was addressed through the appropriate legal process and required counseling and compliance conditions. Ethan accepted the consequence rather than arguing that rescuing Liam gave him permission to strike Rachel afterward.
Judith’s case resulted in much more serious consequences.
There was also a civil protective order keeping her away from Rachel and Liam.
No judge handed Rachel the Parker family estate.
No magical clause disinherited Judith.
No family fortune changed owners overnight.
The seaside property remained within the Parker holding structure.
Judith retained her own wealth and legal rights to her own assets.
The meaningful consequence was access.
She no longer entered Liam’s life simply because she was his grandmother.
Grandparenthood did not override safety.
The family-law attorney Judith had consulted months earlier eventually summarized the irony privately to Ethan after privilege issues were resolved.
“She kept asking how a grandmother could become indispensable to a child.”
Ethan looked at her.
“And?”
“The law was never going to make her indispensable.”
The attorney paused.
“She tried to manufacture the emotional part herself.”
That was exactly what happened.
Judith made Rachel look less capable so Judith could look more necessary.
In the end, the strategy produced the opposite outcome.
