Chapter 11 - Vivian Did Not Burn the House to Collect Insurance

That theory circulated first.
Insurance fraud.
No.
Vivian was not:
an insured.
She was not on:
the deed.
She was not entitled to:
the payout.
She never filed:
a claim.
The motive investigators developed was uglier because it was:
emotional.
Vivian wanted:
me gone.
Her financial situation mattered.
She had:
a pension,
Social Security,
home equity,
manageable but significant debt.
She was not:
destitute.
Daniel’s support had allowed her to live beyond what her retirement income comfortably supported.
After he died, she faced:
choices.
Downsize.
Work part-time.
Reduce spending.
Refinance differently.
Instead she experienced the end of Daniel’s support as:
something Rachel had taken.
Then I refused to pay:
her loan.
Refused to give her:
Daniel’s truck.
Refused to move.
Refused to hand over:
his watch.
Every no became:
evidence
that I had stolen her son.
Investigators believed Vivian entered our house knowing it was empty.
She removed several sentimental items first.
Family photographs.
Daniel’s watch.
A box of his father’s letters.
Then intentionally started:
a fire.
Did she expect the entire house to become nearly uninhabitable?
Her later statements suggested:
maybe not.
She told a clinician:
“I wanted Rachel to have no reason to stay.”
Then:
“I thought the fire department would get there sooner.”
That is not a defense.
You do not control:
fire
after lighting one.
But there was no evidence she intended:
physical harm
to me or Grace.
She knew:
we were at Amanda’s.
That distinction mattered legally and morally.
She tried to destroy:
my home.
Not:
kill my baby.
Still serious.
Still terrifying.
May you like
Different truth.
