Chapter 9 - The Fire Was Suspicious Before Vivian Confessed Anything

The first fire investigators did not immediately call:

arson.

They said:

“Cause under investigation.”

Correct.

The house had:

electrical damage,

fire spread,

structural collapse in part of the rear first floor.

Determining origin required:

work.

Vivian arrived before:

I did.

That bothered me later.

She claimed a neighbor called:

her.

Possible.

I stood on the sidewalk holding Grace while firefighters worked.

Vivian wrapped an arm around:

me.

I remember almost leaning into:

her.

That still makes me feel strange.

Even people who hurt you can temporarily feel:

familiar.

She said:

“Maybe this is a sign.”

I looked at the flames.

“A sign of what?”

“To start over.”

I thought she meant:

grief.

Then the investigation progressed.

The fire marshal identified indicators inconsistent with a simple electrical malfunction.

Laboratory testing later found:

ignitable-liquid residue

in two locations where investigators did not expect it.

The electrical system showed:

fire damage,

not a clear initiating failure.

Then our neighbor across the street mentioned:

her doorbell camera.

At approximately 1:47 a.m., a beige SUV matching Vivian’s vehicle arrived.

It remained:

twenty-one minutes.

The image did not clearly show:

who entered the house.

But someone did.

At 2:11, the vehicle left.

At 2:24:

fire call.

Vivian initially told investigators she had not been there that night.

Then said:

she stopped by briefly.

Why?

“To get a photograph of Daniel.”

No one had asked:

her

to retrieve anything.

Then Officer Cole found Russell walking out of:

the damaged house

with the metal box.

That incident pushed investigators to examine:

post-fire tampering

more closely.

Inside the box?

Not a confession.

Not gasoline receipts.

Something more ordinary.

Daniel’s estate papers.

Copies of:

insurance documents,

our deed,

401(k) statements,

Vivian’s old promissory note for money Daniel had lent her,

and a handwritten list in Vivian’s handwriting.

At the top:

WHAT DANIEL WOULD HAVE WANTED

Below it:

Pay my house.

Truck.

Dad’s watch.

Robert photos.

Rachel moves.

Grace trust?

The list was not illegal.

People write:

angry things.

But combined with everything else, it showed the fire had not created:

Vivian’s property obsession.
