Chapter 6 - Diane’s Hatred Was Older Than Rachel
Diane had been eighteen when she married into money.
Her husband, Robert Cole, was twenty-eight and already working for his father’s development company.
Diane’s own family was middle class.
Robert’s mother never let her forget.
Wrong forks.
Cheap shoes.
Wrong schools.
No family connections.
When Diane became pregnant with Adam, her mother-in-law privately told her:
“At least now Robert has a reason not to reconsider.”
Diane never forgot.
A baby as trap.
That phrase lodged inside her.
Then Robert died when Adam was twenty-two.
Heart attack.
Diane inherited substantial assets.
By then she had spent decades proving she belonged among people who once viewed her as an outsider.
Instead of rejecting the hierarchy, she internalized it.
When Adam brought Rachel home, Diane saw:
herself.
Not consciously.
Rachel was younger.
Less wealthy.
Pregnant quickly.
The similarities made Diane crueler, not kinder.
If Rachel could be accepted easily, what did that say about all the humiliation Diane had endured?
So Diane recreated the test.
Prenup.
Family manners.
Money.
Motives.
Then pregnancy.
A familiar story appeared.
She trapped him.
Exactly what had been said about:
Diane.
Rachel learned that history from Adam’s aunt later.
It explained a great deal.
Excused nothing.
Diane had taken the sentence that wounded her at twenty and handed it to another young mother sixty-two years old.
Then the lakehouse confrontation.
Why grab Rachel’s hair?
Diane claimed Rachel announced she and Adam would be reducing visits with Noah unless Diane stopped criticizing her parenting.
True.
Rachel had set a boundary.
Diane heard:
You’re taking my grandson away.
She exploded.
Then the words:
Take that baby and get out of my family.
Again:
belonging as weapon.
Diane believed she could decide who entered and who left.
Then Adam slapped:
her.
Another family member trying to settle power physically.
