Chapter 1 - The Accusation That Made Margaret Go Pale

Warm afternoon light poured through the tall garden windows of the Santa Barbara estate’s laundry spa room, reflecting off pale stone floors and cream cabinetry.
Claire Morgan was already bent over the large white cleaning bucket.
Margaret had one hand twisted firmly into the back of Claire’s wet brunette hair.
Then she forced Claire’s face down.
Dirty cleaning water closed around Claire’s mouth and nose for one terrifying brief moment before Margaret yanked her back up.
Claire gasped violently.
Water streamed from her hair, eyelashes, and beige blouse.
Margaret leaned close.
“KEEP YOUR DAMN MOUTH SHUT!”
Claire tried to pull away.
Margaret grabbed her again.
One hard push drove Claire back toward the bucket.
Then the door opened.
Ethan Morgan stepped inside.
He froze.
His mother’s hand was still in Claire’s hair.
His wife was soaked and struggling beside a bucket of filthy water.
Margaret released Claire instantly.
Then she ran directly toward Ethan and grabbed his arm as though she were the frightened one.
“SHE WENT CRAZY! SHE CAME AT ME!”
Ethan stared at his mother.
Then at Claire.
Claire remained beside the bucket, bent forward and breathing hard. Slowly, she raised her soaked face.
“SHE HELD MY HEAD UNDER!”
Ethan’s expression changed.
The confusion disappeared first.
Then came rage.
Margaret stiffened.
She turned back toward Claire, panic converting instantly into fury.
“YOU LYING LITTLE BITCH!”
Claire grabbed the bucket with both hands.
She waited until Margaret finished.
Then swung it upward and hurled the dirty water directly at her.
Margaret took the splash across her cardigan, cream trousers, hair, and face.
Ethan recoiled sideways.
His phone slipped from his hand and clattered onto the stone floor.
For one suspended second, all three of them stood there dripping, stunned, furious.
Claire lowered the now-empty bucket.
Then she looked directly at Ethan.
“ASK HER WHAT SHE WAS TRYING TO MAKE ME FORGET.”
Margaret’s face drained of color.
Ethan stopped moving.
He looked at his mother.
And Claire saw the exact moment Margaret understood that the water had failed.
Claire still remembered everything.
May you like
Especially what she had found twenty minutes earlier.
