Chapter 9 - Margaret’s Assault Was About Panic, Not Discipline
Margaret eventually gave a statement through her attorney.
She did not admit trying to drown Claire.
That description would have been inaccurate anyway. The forced immersion was brief, dangerous, humiliating, and abusive, but there was no evidence Margaret intended to kill her.
What she admitted was revealing enough.
Claire found private notes.
Margaret panicked.
She tried to take the folder.
Claire refused.
The argument escalated.
Margaret accused Claire of destroying Ethan’s relationship with his family. Claire threatened to show Ethan everything.
Then Margaret grabbed her.
According to Margaret’s version, she intended to “shock Claire into stopping the hysterics.”
The bucket happened to be there.
Nobody found that persuasive.
You do not force someone’s face into dirty water because you want a calm conversation.
The second push mattered too.
After Claire came up gasping, Margaret had time to stop.
Instead she grabbed her again.
Only Ethan’s entrance ended the assault.
And when he appeared, Margaret did not say:
I lost control.
She said:
She went crazy. She came at me.
The lie was immediate.
Reflexive.
Perfectly consistent with the folder.
Create the event.
Then document Claire as unstable.
Except this time Ethan walked in before Margaret could curate the ending.
That was why the whole system collapsed.
For once, he saw the middle.
