Chapter 7 - Claire’s Notes Matched Margaret’s File Almost Line For Line
The comparison happened that evening.
Claire retrieved the notebook she had kept in the locked drawer of her desk. Margaret’s gray folder was preserved separately after Ethan photographed every page and handed the original to their attorney.
They sat at the kitchen island and compared dates.
March 7.
Margaret’s version: Claire became emotionally agitated during breakfast discussion.
Claire’s version: Margaret told me I embarrass Ethan because I “speak like a salesgirl” around donors. I yelled. Ethan wasn’t there.
March 19.
Margaret: Claire accused staff of moving personal items.
Claire: Blue presentation binder missing from office. Found two days later in guest-room cabinet. Margaret said maid must have moved it.
April 2.
Margaret: Claire screamed at Margaret without provocation.
Claire: Margaret canceled brunch with Nina and told Nina I was sick. I confronted her. She said I should be grateful she “protects me from overcommitting.”
April 18.
Margaret: Claire confused about dinner invitation.
Claire: Margaret told me dinner moved to 8. Ethan left at 7 because original time unchanged.
May 11.
Margaret: Claire displayed paranoia regarding communications.
Claire: Asked Ethan why three people said I hadn’t replied to invitations I never received.
The pattern was undeniable.
Margaret repeatedly created or exploited confusion.
Then documented Claire’s reaction without the triggering act.
It was sophisticated because everything written in the folder was technically adjacent to truth.
Claire had yelled.
Claire had accused.
Claire had insisted.
What disappeared was why.
Ethan stared at the two columns of reality until his face changed.
“She was creating the incidents.”
Claire shook her head.
“Not all of them. Some were just normal conflicts.”
“Then twisting them.”
“Yes.”
That was worse in some ways.
Because Margaret did not need to manufacture an entire false world.
