Chapter 9 - Daniel Learned His Mother Had Been Using His Name
The fiduciary review uncovered something worse than insults.
Victoria had repeatedly approached advisers implying Daniel supported the proposed trust investment.
He did not.
In one email she wrote:
Daniel and Emily are aligned in principle. Emily’s mother is the only resistance.
False.
Another:
My son believes family consolidation is the sensible long-term structure.
Also false.
Daniel read the messages in our attorney’s office.
His face went white.
“She used my name.”
“Yes,” I said.
“I never told her that.”
“I know.”
Then one adviser produced meeting notes.
Victoria had suggested that because I was “neurologically impaired after the accident,” Daniel might eventually need broader financial authority over me.
I had no cognitive impairment.
None.
My injuries affected mobility.
Not judgment.
Daniel stood so quickly his chair nearly fell backward.
“She said what?”
Mom remained calm.
“That is why the independent committee denied direct family management access.”
Daniel covered his face.
I could see something happening inside him.
For months he believed his mother was greedy.
Now he understood she had been willing to reinterpret my disability as diminished competence.
Not because she believed it.
