Chapter 1 - ACTIVATE BLUEBIRD

The afternoon light made the Hartwell dining room look peaceful.

Sunlight spilled across the long oak table. Crystal glasses stood beside folded linen napkins. A silver baby carrier rested near the open kitchen, gently rocking as the six-month-old girl inside began to cry.

Nothing about the room looked dangerous.

Emily Hartwell stood at the sink with both hands submerged in cloudy dishwater.

Her shoulders sagged.

Her blouse was wrinkled from holding the baby all morning. A faint bruise hid beneath the makeup along her jaw. She had prepared lunch for seven people, cleared every plate, and reheated Evan’s meal twice because he said it was cold.

Evan Hartwell stood behind her.

“Move faster!”

He snatched a dirty plate from the table and threw it toward the sink.

The plate struck the metal basin with a violent crack.

Emily flinched.

Evan stepped closer and pointed inches from her face.

“My mother wants dessert. Do you understand?”

Gloria Hartwell sat at the dining table with a smug smile.

“She was never raised to manage a proper home.”

Emily lowered her eyes.

Before Evan could speak again, Margaret Hartwell entered from the hallway.

She was sixty-eight, elegant, widowed, and dressed in a cream suit that made her look as if she had come directly from a board meeting.

She crossed the kitchen without rushing.

Evan reached toward Emily’s shoulder.

Margaret caught his wrist.

Then she slapped him once.

The sound cut through the room.

Evan staggered back, stunned.

Margaret did not raise her voice.

“Touch her again.”

The baby began crying harder.

Margaret lifted her granddaughter from Emily’s arms, settling the child against her shoulder while keeping her eyes on Evan.

Gloria shot to her feet.

“How dare you!”

Margaret took out her phone.

Evan touched his burning cheek and laughed.

“You think this is your house?”

Margaret dialed one number.

When the call connected, she said four words.

“Activate Bluebird.”

She ended the call.

Evan took one step toward her, then stopped when the front doorbell rang.

Heavy footsteps crossed the entryway.

Two suited security officers entered and stood just inside the door.

The room went silent.

One officer looked directly at Margaret.

“Mrs. Hartwell?”

Margaret held the baby with one arm and stood beside Emily.

“Yes.”

Evan’s face lost color.

Gloria gripped the edge of the table.

May you like

Margaret nodded toward them.

“Begin.”
