Chapter 9 - THE VERDICTS
The criminal cases took nearly two years.
Gloria was convicted of conspiracy connected to Thomas’s death, evidence tampering, and financial crimes.
She received twenty-one years.
Evan was convicted of coercive control, fraud, conspiracy, unlawful administration of medication, attempted exploitation of a protected trust, and evidence fabrication.
He received twenty-six years.
The physician lost his license and went to prison.
Several relatives who lied in custody statements entered plea agreements.
Margaret faced consequences too.
She was not charged with Thomas’s death.
But federal investigators found she participated in later concealment.
She accepted a settlement, resigned from executive leadership, surrendered personal assets, and testified publicly.
At the sentencing hearing, Evan looked at Emily.
“You would have nothing without me.”
Emily stood.
“I had nothing because of you.”
He laughed bitterly.
“You think money makes you free?”
“No.”
She looked toward Margaret.
“Truth does not make you free either. But it tells you which door is real.”
The baby, now two, slept against Margaret’s shoulder.
The same way she had on the day Bluebird activated.
After court, Emily met with employee representatives.
The Bluebird Trust held billions in company value.
She could have taken control.
Instead, she proposed restructuring.
A large portion would restore pension losses and fund employee ownership.
Another portion would support survivors of financial and domestic abuse.
The remaining family shares would be placed under transparent governance.
Board meetings would be public to beneficiaries.
No secret heirs.
No silent protocols controlled by one person.
Margaret asked, “Are you sure?”
Emily looked at her.
“Bluebird protected me only because you chose to use it.”
“That was Richard’s intention.”
“Richard also hid too much.”
Margaret nodded.
“So what replaces it?”
