Chapter 5 - THE WIDOW’S VOTE
Hartwell Industries appeared to be controlled by a family board.
Evan held a senior vice president title.
Gloria boasted that her branch of the family would inherit everything.
But Richard Hartwell had reorganized ownership before his death.
Forty-one percent belonged to the Bluebird Trust.
Thirty-four percent belonged to Margaret through voting shares.
The remaining shares were divided among relatives and employees.
Together, Margaret and Bluebird controlled the company.
Emily controlled nothing yet because the trust remained sealed.
But the emergency activation gave Margaret temporary fiduciary authority on Emily’s behalf.
That was why security arrived.
Not to arrest Evan.
To protect the controlling beneficiary.
Evan learned the truth from his attorney.
Within hours, he filed for emergency custody of the baby.
He claimed Emily was mentally unstable and Margaret had assaulted him.
The filing included Gloria’s journal, the private doctor’s records, and photographs of Emily asleep during the day.
The hearing began three days later.
Evan entered court wearing a dark suit and a small bandage near his cheek.
His lawyer called him a concerned father.
Margaret sat behind Emily.
Emily’s hands trembled.
Her attorney, Rachel Dunn, placed one photograph on the table.
It showed Emily asleep in a chair with the baby carrier beside her.
Evan’s lawyer asked, “Is this responsible parenting?”
Rachel requested the full image metadata.
The photograph had been taken at 4:12 a.m.
Emily had been awake for nearly twenty hours because Evan refused to help with the baby.
The next photograph showed dirty dishes.
The timestamp was twelve minutes after a dinner for nine guests.
The next showed prescription bottles.
Pharmacy records proved Evan collected the medication and increased the dosage without Emily’s doctor’s approval.
The private physician invoked his right to counsel.
Gloria’s journal collapsed under questioning.
One entry claimed Emily left the baby unattended during a family lunch.
Security footage showed Gloria carrying the baby into another room, then accusing Emily of not knowing where she was.
The judge denied Evan’s custody request.
He ordered supervised contact only.
Evan stared at Emily as the decision was read.
Not sad.
Not afraid.
Furious.
Outside court, he whispered as she passed:
“You still don’t know what your father did.”
Emily stopped.
Margaret placed a hand on her shoulder.
“Keep walking.”
