Chapter 6 - Ben Had Been Telling Linda I Was Too Soft Behind My Back

I learned about the messages three days after the hospital.
Ben was staying at a hotel.
I had changed:
the locks.
Not secretly.
I told him.
I needed space and a home where I was certain Linda could not appear using an old key.
Ben said I was:
punishing him.
I answered:
“I’m protecting Ellie while I decide whether you understand what happened.”
He hated:
that.
The child-protection investigator assigned to the report asked us to preserve communications related to caregiving and discipline.
So Ben eventually provided:
texts with Linda.
Not because anyone seized:
his phone.
His attorney advised:
cooperation.
Most were ordinary.
Pictures.
Schedules.
Groceries.
Then:
Ben: Rachel babies her every time she cries.
Linda: Because Rachel wants to be her friend instead of her mother.
Ben: I know.
Another:
Linda: She threw her cup again today. Rachel says “redirect.” Ridiculous.
Ben: Do what you did with us. She needs boundaries.
My stomach turned.
Another:
Linda: Rachel will lose it if Ellie gets upset.
Ben: Don’t tell her every little tantrum. She doesn’t need a report every time you say no.
There.
That one mattered.
Ben had created:
a separate parenting channel
between him and his mother.
Not because he planned abuse.
Because he believed I was:
too soft
and did not want the inconvenience of:
debating me.
I confronted him in our first couples-therapy session.
“What did ‘do what you did with us’ mean?”
Ben rubbed his face.
“Be firm.”
“Your mother believed throwing hot coffee was being firm.”
“I didn’t know she’d do that.”
“I know.”
“You keep acting like I ordered it.”
“I’m acting like you told someone who repeatedly criticized my parenting that she could override me when I wasn’t there.”
He became quiet.
Then:
“You didn’t exactly stop her either.”
That sentence made me furious.
Because it was defensive.
And because eventually I would discover:
there was truth inside it.
Not equal truth.
May you like
Still truth.
