Chapter 7 - Linda Tried to Turn an Intentional Act Into an Accident
Linda hired an attorney.
Good.
She needed one.
Her initial statement was:
Ellie reached for the mug.
Linda moved it quickly.
Coffee accidentally spilled.
The video destroyed that version.
Not because cameras know:
motives.
Because the motion was clear.
Linda lifted the mug.
Moved it forward.
Released the liquid in Ellie’s direction.
Then immediately said:
Maybe now that little brat will learn to keep her hands to herself.
After reviewing the recording, her story changed.
She said she intended to:
splash
Ellie’s shirt
with coffee she believed had cooled.
Not burn:
her.
That was closer to the truth.
Still terrible.
The mug had been sitting roughly eight minutes.
Not freshly poured.
That was probably why Ellie’s burns remained:
superficial.
The pediatric specialist explained something I would never forget:
The fact that the injury could have been worse did not make the conduct:
less intentional.
Linda wanted:
fear,
discomfort,
a consequence.
She misjudged:
temperature
and:
severity.
That distinction mattered legally.
It did not make her:
safe.
The investigation also found no evidence of prior serious physical injury.
No hidden pattern of burns.
No unexplained fractures.
No horrifying secret history.
That should have comforted me.
Instead I kept thinking:
This was the first time because eventually there is always:
a first time.
