Chapter 10 - The Fake Belly Was Designed To Beat A Search

I asked Mom one question repeatedly.

“Why the belly?”

Her answer made the plan even clearer.

Three days before the planned departure, I became convinced someone had taken Ava’s passport intentionally.

I told Mark I wanted every suitcase and drawer checked.

Mom overheard.

She realized we might search her room.

So she ordered the silicone belly months earlier?

No.

That would have created a second secret plan.

The purchase receipt showed she bought it locally after arriving in Santa Barbara.

A specialty costume supplier carried high-end prosthetics for film and photography work.

Mom paid cash.

The belly had a removable foam section on the underside.

She cut and reinforced that cavity herself.

Why not simply carry the passport in her purse?

Because she expected security might inspect luggage if we reported the passport missing.

Why not hide it in the travel bag?

Because she had already placed the bag near the service exit.

She wanted the one item absolutely necessary for international travel physically attached to her body until departure.

The belly was not about pretending she was pregnant.

She never announced a pregnancy.

Never expected us to believe she was pregnant.

The loose tunic simply concealed the prosthetic.

It functioned as a body-worn hiding compartment.

Ridiculous.

Elaborate.

But purposeful.

And because nobody casually asks a fifty-seven-year-old woman why her abdomen looks different, she expected social politeness to protect her.

It almost did.

The detail that finally exposed her was not technology.

It was how defensive she became when I looked too long.

The disguise worked until the person beneath it panicked.

That became a pattern I noticed everywhere afterward.

Helen’s plans were rarely as flawless as they seemed.

They succeeded because the rest of us had been trained not to challenge her.
