Chapter 6 - The Belly Wasn’t There At Breakfast

The first person who noticed was Mark.

We were having breakfast in the retreat dining room.

Mom arrived wearing the dark blue tunic.

She sat down.

Mark looked at her strangely.

Later, in our room, he asked:

“Did your mom gain a lot of weight overnight?”

I almost laughed.

Then realized he was serious.

“She’s wearing something bulky.”

“Under her shirt?”

“I guess.”

The shape was too smooth.

Too rounded.

And much lower than normal weight gain.

I confronted myself before confronting her.

Maybe it was medical.

A brace.

A support garment.

Something private.

Mom was fifty-seven. She deserved dignity.

So I said nothing.

That afternoon, a laundry attendant told Marianne that Helen had become extremely protective of one large tote bag and refused normal housekeeping service.

Still not proof of anything.

Then came the nursery footage.

The retreat had cameras only in common infant-care spaces where families signed consent forms.

No cameras inside private bedrooms.

The nursery adjacent to the family common room was covered because staff occasionally supervised babies there.

At 2:13 the previous morning, motion activated the system.

Helen entered alone.

Ava had been sleeping in our private room with us, so Mom had no reason to be there.

She closed the nursery door.

Looked around.

Lifted her tunic.

Removed the silicone belly.

Marianne saw the clip during her morning review because Helen remained in the room for almost eight minutes.

Then she saw the passport.

She called Mark first.

Mark told her not to confront Helen until we knew exactly what was happening.

That was why he looked so tense beside me that afternoon.

That was why my smartphone already contained the saved clip.

And that was why, when I finally asked Mom what she was hiding beneath her shirt, Mark did not look confused.

He was watching her reaction.

The slap answered more than any denial could have.
