Chapter 8 - Helen Said She Was “Protecting” Ava

Mom finally agreed to talk with us after counsel arrived.

She did not deny the flight.

That surprised me.

Instead, she denied the word take.

“I was bringing her somewhere safe.”

Mark stared at her.

“Without her parents?”

“For a few days.”

“To another country.”

“Vancouver isn’t the moon.”

I almost laughed from disbelief.

“You stole her passport.”

“I secured it.”

“You hid it inside a fake stomach.”

“Because you were searching my things.”

“We were searching for our daughter’s passport!”

Mom’s face hardened.

Then she looked at me.

“Rachel, you are proving why I was worried.”

That sentence nearly broke me.

Even now.

Even with the footage.

She still wanted my reaction to become evidence against me.

I stood.

Mark touched my arm.

I stayed where I was.

Mom continued.

“You haven’t been well since Ava was born.”

“My doctor disagrees.”

“You see her once a week.”

“She’s my doctor.”

“I’ve lived with you.”

There was the heart of Helen’s certainty.

Proximity had become authority.

She had seen my worst nights.

My panic.

My tears.

My exhaustion.

She had converted witnessing vulnerability into ownership over the judgment of what should happen next.

“I was going to give you time,” she said.

“Time for what?”

“To stabilize.”

My hands went cold.

“Where was Ava going to live?”

“With me.”

“For how long?”

Helen hesitated.

That hesitation mattered.

“A few weeks.”

“Where?”

“I rented a furnished apartment.”

“In Vancouver?”

“Yes.”

“Why Canada?”

“Because you would come after me immediately if I stayed here.”

The room went silent.

Mom heard herself too late.

This was not respite care.

Not a misunderstanding.

Not a grandmother taking a baby overnight because a daughter needed sleep.

She had deliberately chosen a place outside the country because she expected us to object.

Mark leaned forward.

“You knew we would say no.”

Helen did not answer.

He repeated it.

“You knew.”

Finally:

May you like

“Yes.”

That one word stripped away every excuse she had left.
