Chapter 10 - We Had All Been Protecting the Family Order in Different Ways

My therapist later asked:

“What warning signs did you dismiss?”

I wanted to say:

none.

Then we started listing.

First:

the pregnancy announcement.

Mom asked whether I had:

waited.

I knew the meaning.

I continued involving her as though she had merely been:

awkward.

Clue one.

Second:

the name.

She told me I did not have the right to name my own daughter:

Lily.

I laughed it off because Rebecca did not care.

But Rebecca’s permission was not the only issue.

Mom believed:

my child’s identity

belonged inside her hierarchy.

Clue two.

Third:

the hospital.

Helen refused to:

hold Lily.

Daniel said:

“She looks like she hates her.”

I told him:

don’t say that.

Not because evidence contradicted him.

Because the conclusion frightened:

me.

Clue three.

Then the baby shower.

I almost canceled.

Three days beforehand, Mom called and asked:

“Is Rebecca definitely coming?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

“Why?”

“No reason.”

I felt:

something.

I called Rebecca.

“Mom being weird?”

“Always.”

We laughed.

I allowed the party.

Why?

Because I wanted:

one normal family event.

That desire sounds harmless.

But normality had become something we manufactured by asking everyone to:

behave around Helen.

I also felt guilty.

Mom had not met Lily properly.

Dad kept saying:

“She needs a chance.”

I gave:

one.

That did not make the attempted harm my fault.

Helen chose every movement she made.

But I had spent years minimizing the family hierarchy because confronting it risked:

conflict.

My father did the same more seriously.

Rebecca hid Mom’s comments because she feared:

hurting me.

I hid my resentment because I feared:

hurting Rebecca.

Daniel recognized danger more clearly than any of us because he had not grown up inside:

the system.

The family rule was not merely:

Rebecca goes first.

The deeper rule was:

Helen’s emotional stability is everyone’s responsibility.

May you like

That was the rule we finally broke.
