Chapter 11 - Rebecca’s Miscarriage Was Never Helen’s Property

For months after the incident, Rebecca avoided talking about:

her lost pregnancy.

Then she said something that changed how I understood our mother.

“Mom made my miscarriage into a family title.”

I asked:

“What?”

“The baby stopped being mine.”

“She turned it into ‘the first grandbaby we lost.’”

I remembered:

the box.

The blanket.

The preserved ultrasound.

Rebecca continued.

“I didn’t even know whether it was a girl.”

“Mom decided it was.”

“Then she decided that imaginary daughter had a place Lily stole.”

That was exactly what happened.

Helen had taken:

Rebecca’s private grief

and built a mythology around it.

Not consciously at first.

She desperately wanted meaning.

Order.

A future correction.

If Rebecca lost the “first” baby, then Rebecca must someday receive:

the first successful baby.

Otherwise life had broken:

the sequence.

Margaret’s pregnancy shattered the repair story Helen had invented.

Instead of adjusting:

the story,

Helen treated:

reality

as the violation.

Rebecca said:

“I don’t want another baby right now.”

I nodded.

She and Nathan had decided to stop fertility treatment for at least:

a year.

Maybe permanently.

“I’m tired of my body being everybody’s family project.”

Fair.

She became Lily’s aunt without:

bitterness.

In fact, she was almost annoyingly good at it.

She could get Lily to stop crying faster than:

me.

I resented that for exactly:

six seconds.

Then handed her the baby and slept.

Healthy hierarchy.

Whoever gets the baby to nap is:

May you like

first.
