Chapter 4 - The Afternoon Judith Took Bunny Away

Rachel remembered the day before the Aspen confrontation in perfect detail.

Ella had been sitting near the hotel fireplace coloring when Mom walked over and inspected the rabbit.

She noticed one loose thread near its side.

“I’ll have that fixed.”

Ella hugged the rabbit tighter.

“No.”

Mom smiled.

“Sweetheart, I’m helping.”

Ella still refused.

That irritated Judith.

Eventually Rachel intervened.

“If Ella doesn’t want to let it go, leave it.”

Mom’s tone sharpened.

“The seam is opening.”

“We can fix it later.”

Instead, Judith waited until Rachel stepped away to answer a call.

Then she took the rabbit.

Ella cried.

Mom carried it upstairs.

Three hours later, she returned it.

The seam looked repaired.

Mom told everyone a hotel seamstress had stitched it closed.

Nobody questioned her.

The next day, Ella carried Bunny into the atrium.

Judith saw it.

Something about that sight triggered panic.

She told Ella to leave the rabbit in the room.

Ella refused.

Judith reached for it.

Ella clung harder.

By the time Rachel arrived, the confrontation had already escalated.

Now we knew why.

Mom had not been trying to protect a toy from damage.

She had recently reopened the rabbit.

The ring had been moved or repositioned inside.

And somehow Judith knew the rabbit had become dangerous.

After Ella was safely upstairs that night, Rachel inspected the seam.

Two different stitch patterns were visible.

One older.

One extremely fresh.

We called the resort tailoring desk.

A woman named Helen Morris answered.

At first she remembered only that an older guest had brought in a stuffed animal.

Then we gave her Mom’s name.

Helen became quiet.

“Yes,” she said. “I remember Mrs. Carter.”

“What did she ask you to do?”

A pause.

“She wanted me to open the side seam.”

Rachel looked at me.

“Why?”

Helen answered:

“She gave me a gold ring wrapped in tissue and asked me to place it deeper inside before sewing the toy closed again.”

That was the first independent proof.

My mother had knowingly hidden Dad’s ring inside Ella’s rabbit.

The question was no longer whether.

It was why.
