Chapter 9 - The Video Dad Recorded For The Day I Finally Looked

The flash drive required a password.
The password was not difficult.
Ella’s birthday.
That felt deliberate.
Dad wanted me to understand who he was protecting.
The first file was a video.
Dad sat in his study.
No dramatic lighting.
No legal team standing beside him.
Just my father in a gray sweater, looking tired.
He spoke directly to the camera.
“If Daniel is watching this, Judith has probably told him I became paranoid.”
I almost laughed from the pain of how accurate it was.
Dad explained the financial issue.
Over four years, Carter Alpine Hospitality had paid approximately $680,000 to three consulting vendors.
Some work was real.
Some invoices were inflated.
Some had almost no supporting documentation.
Two vendors traced indirectly to companies Mom benefited from.
A third was controlled by a longtime friend who quietly transferred money into one of Mom’s private investment vehicles.
Dad said he did not yet know whether every questionable payment met a criminal standard.
That was important to him.
He refused to exaggerate.
But he knew enough to remove Mom’s authority.
Then his expression hardened.
“I confronted Judith. She told me everything we built belonged equally to her because she stood beside me while I built it.”
Dad paused.
“In marriage, that feeling may be emotionally understandable. In a company, it is not governance.”
He said Mom became furious when he amended the trust.
She accused him of choosing Rachel over her.
That surprised me.
Rachel had nothing to do with the amendment.
Dad knew it.
Mom did not care.
Rachel represented the future family unit Mom could not control.
Then Dad said:
“If Judith cannot control the money, she will try to control Daniel’s understanding of the money. Daniel has always mistaken keeping peace for keeping judgment.”
Rachel looked at me.
May you like
I could not meet her eyes.
Dad had identified the exact failure that led me to slap my wife in the atrium.
