Chapter 13 - The Court Didn’t Hand Me The Ranch Overnight
The ownership dispute took almost a year.
That was frustrating.
It was also appropriate.
Original deeds do not magically settle complex title problems simply because someone dramatically produces one at a horse auction.
The court examined execution.
Delivery.
Dad’s capacity.
The trust structure.
The lender’s existing rights.
Evelyn’s possession of the deed.
Sam’s instructions.
The notary records.
Lauren’s claim that Dad abandoned the transfer.
Independent experts reviewed the documents.
The lender argued that even if Lauren exceeded parts of her authority, it had relied on representations it believed valid.
That required separate negotiation.
Eventually the core conclusions became clear.
Dad had validly executed the deed.
He intended the property transferred into the preservation trust.
The trust itself was valid.
Lauren had no basis to treat the ranch as property she personally expected to inherit free of those restrictions.
The existing lien issue did not disappear.
We settled it.
Miller Crown repaid a negotiated portion attributable to legitimate ranch obligations.
Lauren and her Brazos Crown entity remained responsible for the rest.
Several unrelated assets she owned had to be sold.
Brazos Crown Estates eventually entered restructuring and was later sold to another developer.
Lauren lost money.
A lot of it.
She did not become penniless.
Dad’s legitimate provisions for her remained.
But she lost control of Miller Crown Bloodstock after the board concluded her conduct violated fiduciary obligations.
That consequence hurt her more than the money.
For the first time since she was twenty-five, Lauren did not have a title inside the family business.
And I did not replace her as queen.
The preservation trust had an independent trustee.
The ranch company had a board.
Major debt required formal approvals.
Exactly the system Dad wanted.
Lauren had mistaken oversight for humiliation.
