Chapter 7 - Who Actually Saved The Deed
The person who saved it was Dad’s longtime ranch secretary, Evelyn Ross.
Not another mystery.
The missing link.
Evelyn had worked beside Dad for twenty-six years.
After Dad’s funeral, Lauren replaced her.
Evelyn said retirement suited her.
That was not the full story.
When Lauren and Dad argued over the trust, Evelyn was in the outer office.
She heard Dad say:
“You had no right to use my signature.”
She heard Lauren answer:
“I did what had to be done.”
Later that evening, Evelyn saw Lauren enter Dad’s office after he went upstairs.
Lauren left carrying several papers.
Evelyn became suspicious.
After Lauren drove away, she checked the office.
The deed envelope was gone from Dad’s desk.
Evelyn walked outside.
Lauren’s car was still near the stable office because she had stopped to speak with a trainer.
The envelope was sitting partly visible inside an open leather portfolio on the passenger seat.
Evelyn made a decision she later admitted was reckless.
She took it.
Not because she planned some elaborate exposure.
Because Dad had spent thirty years trusting her with original records, and she knew a signed land deed should not be leaving in Lauren’s personal bag after their argument.
Evelyn locked it inside the old fireproof records cabinet.
Then Dad was hospitalized.
Everything became chaos.
Evelyn tried to tell Sam.
Lauren restricted staff access and began terminating longtime employees.
Evelyn became frightened she would be accused of theft for taking the document from Lauren’s car.
So she removed the deed when she cleared her desk.
She kept it.
For months.
That delay complicated everything.
But she never destroyed it.
After Lauren fired her, Evelyn eventually contacted Sam.
She did not trust email.
Did not want Lauren learning she had it.
So she mailed the original anonymously, then called Sam two days later and admitted everything.
The note saying For Grace when she comes home had been Evelyn’s.
She knew Dad wanted me back.
Sam authenticated the deed.
The notary confirmed the signatures.
A forensic examiner found no alteration.
Then Sam contacted me.
Lauren believed the original had disappeared forever.
