Chapter 11 - the husband Chloe wanted was never really there
One of the few things that gave me peace in the middle of everything was learning just how completely Chloe had misread Ethan.
She had built a fantasy version of him: a powerful husband secretly burdened by a fragile pregnant wife, drawn to the sister who “really understood him,” ready to sweep in and reward devotion once the right obstacle disappeared. It was the kind of narrative people create when they need desire to double as entitlement.
The real Ethan was furious in a quieter, more permanent way.
He did not visit Chloe. He did not accept her calls. He did not ask me to be compassionate. He did not try to soften her consequences because she was “still family.” What he did do was sit with me at every medical follow-up, rework his schedule so I was rarely alone, and meet with counsel to make sure Chloe’s access to anything connected to us—codes, passes, invitations, even charitable-event guest lists—was gone.
One night, maybe three weeks after the attack, I asked him something I had been afraid to say aloud.
“Did she ever make you feel… responsible for her?”
He exhaled slowly. “Yes. But not the way she wanted.”
He told me he had always known Chloe leaned on him too much emotionally. He just misjudged the risk because he assumed immaturity would burn itself out if he stayed calm. “I thought if I didn’t react, she’d get embarrassed and stop.”
Instead, his restraint had given her room to keep weaving fantasy around silence.
That conversation did not erase my anger. But it helped. Not because Ethan was blameless—he wasn’t—but because he was honest. He understood that failing to feed a delusion is not the same as firmly shutting it down, and he accepted that his passivity had helped Chloe remain close enough to become dangerous.
After that, he stopped talking about what he had misunderstood about Chloe.
