Chapter 6 - Ethan had his own blind spot

It would be easy to tell this story as if Ethan saw Chloe for exactly what she was from the beginning and simply got fooled by one dramatic afternoon.

That would not be true.

Ethan’s blind spot was mercy.

He had grown up with money, but not in the soft, careless way people imagine. The Carter family ran a tight, disciplined life, and Ethan had spent years proving he was more than a beneficiary of it. He built North Shore Response with two former Marine friends, turned it into a legitimate executive protection and estate security company, and hated waste in all forms—especially wasted potential. So when Chloe came around with debt, drama, and desperate promises that she was finally getting herself together, he wanted to help.

Not with our finances directly. He never put her on an account or gave her formal control over anything. But he paid for a lawyer consult when one of her vendors threatened suit. He let her attend a few family lunches when I asked him to. He assumed her neediness was pathetic rather than predatory.

When I hinted that Chloe’s attention toward him made me uncomfortable, he said, more than once, “She wants stability, Liv. That’s all this is.”

I wanted to believe that too.

That night, after Margaret laid out what she had found, Ethan finally looked at me and understood what his kindness had cost. “You told me something felt off,” he said quietly. “I should’ve listened.”

It wasn’t a dramatic apology, and I didn’t need one. What I needed was the truth. Ethan had not betrayed me with Chloe. But he had underestimated her so badly that he kept allowing her access to a life she had already started treating as hers to invade.

“I should’ve protected you better,” he said.

I took his hand. “Protect me now.”

And he did.

Before midnight, Chloe was barred from every Carter property. By the next morning, Ethan had delivered a written statement to the sheriff’s office, turned over all gate and guest-access records from the estate, and instructed North Shore Response to preserve every scrap of footage and call data from that afternoon.

He could not undo the strike to my leg.

He could make sure Chloe never got near me again.
